Video of The Day: Methyl Ethel

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

I've got one particular song stuck in my head these days, and I have to say I'm more than ok with that. The song in question? That would be Methyl Ethel's delicious new ditty "Trip the Mains."

The song comes from Methyl Ethel's forthcoming third record Triage (out on 4AD this very February 15!), and while still obviously the work of ME mastermind Jake Webb, the song's weird and wonderful dream-shimmy-pop is overlaid with an unexpected gray gloom of pure, furrowed brow pining. The weight of reality does nothing to stem the pop sensibilities of the song, of course; diabolical slink like this is pretty hard to keep under wraps. It's a divine song, and one that's so ridiculously catchy that it's nigh on impossible to listen to just once. Which is just fine by me.

The video for the song is all Webb, all the time, spending a lot of time falling onto his back in various speeds of motion and sitting broodingly in a chair on a hell of an angle. Basically, like previous Methyl Ethel videos it's a thinkpiece in video format. And I love it.
