Video of The Day - Halloween Edition: Camille Saint-Saëns

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

At this special time of year, besides the usual Halloween jams, I'm a big fan of two bewitching classical compositions. I've already talked about one before, "Night on Bald Mountain," so this year I'm focusing on the other - "Danse Macabre." This Saint-Saëns masterpiece is effortlessly atmospheric, its swells and crescendoes perfectly evocative of all things spectral. The video has been a favorite of mine for decades now, illustrated as it was for PBS in full ghostly glory. The video is a treasure, and the composition is a thing of supernatural beauty. Trick or treat, indeed.
