Video of The Day: LA Priest

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

The video for LA Priest's smoothly sassy, decadently synth-laden "Beginning" falls somewhere between Depeche Mode's clip for "Enjoy The Silence" clip and Monty Python & The Holy Grail. Shot in coastal Wales, the video follows LA Priest mastermind Sam Eastgate and his supersized flying-v guitar as they traverse wild countryside, a ramble that ultimately doesn't end all that well for the ill-fated v.

It makes for a witty visual counterpoint to the song, all honeyed, silky cooing and curvaceous grooves gilded with the endless prisms of a room full of glitter balls. There's a hint of the sensual to the song, something hinting at spider-to-the-fly entrapment. "Beginning" also serves as Eastgate's introduction of new toy GENE The Machine, a custom drum machine that's quite obviously more than up to par.

You'll find "Beginning" on LA Priest's forthcoming record, also called GENE, out June 5 on Domino.
