Video of The Day: Bananagun

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

If you're looking for something a little chilled and subtle for your Sunday, friend, move right along. There's absolutely nothing chilled or subtle about Aussie outfit Bananagun's call to party "Out of Reach."

There is absolutely no way to listen to this song and not be shimmying something by the end of it. The song is more than a little flamboyantly far out, a phantasmagorical concoction of steamy tropicalia, freaky funk, and high-as-a-fleet-of-kites psych, all coming together with delirious abandon into one of the most insanely catchy songs I've heard in ages. It's the kind of song that feels as though it's been unearthed from a sort of sonic time capsule, buried treasure from another time (possibly another galaxy).

But the nostalgia factor isn't just high in the song, the video plays up the vintage vibes as well. The band (in wide lapels, flares, and '60s cuts) cuts many rugs in the clip, and the video's bold borders and highlighted lyrics (in a fabulously kitsch font) add to the effect. The ending's a surprise, but somehow fits right in. Watch and enjoy, but good luck getting this one out of your brain.
