Video of The Day: Lake Jons

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Finnish duo Lake Jons took their name from a lake in the wilds of their home country, and it must be said that there's something a little wild and otherworldly about their newest single, "Circle." Incorporating slinky, icy cool beats with rustic dreampop, the song feels suspended in reminiscences of the past, its heartbeat bound to the middle of the woods. It's a quietly powerful song, a song that definitely tugs the old heartstrings.

Half of the Lake Jons twosome, Jooel Jons, describes the song thusly, “Circle is such a complete shape. The essence of existence in is so full of intricacies, both delicate and powerful, and the circle of life is among them. It’s something that is maintained, even through humanity’s efforts to break everything. The song tells a small story about a boy who lived by the waters of Lake Jons and one day decided to leave the woods. It’s a letter to a dear friend; life’s a mysterious circle.”

Director Raimo Saba created a video that feels both cinematic and intimate, saying, "Thinking about freedom in itself brings with it subconscious limitations. I think the concept of freedom is more valuable than one can even understand. It is not just an external concept. It is bound to be a state of yourself and where outside factors have no effect on your state of being." The video is rather majestic, a poignant slice-of-life observation that's visually pleasing and thought-provoking. You might want to have a tissue at hand, just in case.

You can find "Circle" on the Lake Jons LP The Coast, out now.
