Good Cover Version: Katy J Pearson Does M. Ward

Pulp gave the world the song "Bad Cover Version." But seeing as I'm a sonic optimist, I'm of the belief that there's more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

Here's the thing. I'm pretty much obsessed with Katy J Pearson's rendition of M. Ward's "Poison Cup." Mind you, the original is no slouch, but the way Katy has taken the song into near Dolly-esque territory is mighty special.

Bristolian Pearson, newly signed to Heavenly Recordings, imbues her version of the song with all manner of emotional complexities, voice occasionally trembling under the weight of that crazy little thing called love. Says Katy, "hopefully if M Ward ever were to hear it he doesn't mind our version!" Somehow, I don't think he'd mind one bit.

Katy will be hitting the road over across the pond later this year/early next year, and one can only hope she'll be venturing over to this side of the world in the very near future.
