Video of The Day: The Black Drumset

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

There must be something of the dark arts to "The Last Beat of The Last Elk Heart." This visceral, compelling song from Austin's The Black Drumset is spellbinding almost immediately, an urgent and intense pyre of unrelenting instrumentation. You'd be forgiven for expecting to hear some kind of spoken-in-tongues incantations over the bursts of tribal drumbeats, though the only words you'll hear are at the song's death, when the song's intensity eases and melts away like mist.

The video for the song creates a hell of a tripped-out audiovisual experience, with a rotating fake elk taking the central role and lighting/camera effects doing the rest. It's simple but incredibly effective at hypnotically creating a nearly out of body listening experience. Utter dynamite.
