Video of The Day: LUMP

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

There's something wonderfully weird about the music Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay make together as LUMP. "May I Be The Light" is a perfect example, a divine work of freak folk, absurdist pop, and radiant rabbit hole lullaby. Marling's vocals shapeshift splendidly amongst the off-kilter textures of the song. This duo's chance partnership is proving to be quite a happy accident indeed.

The video, of course, needed to be as eccentric as LUMP's sound - shall we say mission accomplished? The video, directed and animated by Beth Jeans Houghton, uses a cotton candy color palette and trippy imagery (in the vein of some of those fantastic Oh Sees videos) to capture the kookiness to perfection, and Houghton's renderings of Marling and Mike Lindsay are simply delightful.

LUMP's debut record is out now on Dead Oceans.
