Good Cover Version: Lucy Mason Does Radiohead

Pulp gave the world the song "Bad Cover Version." But seeing as I'm a sonic optimist, I'm of the belief that there's more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

To this day, The Bends still ranks as my favorite Radiohead record. I've listened to it countless times, and it's impossible to express just how much of an impact those songs had on me in my younger days. "High and Dry" was a perennial favorite, and of course, no one will ever be able to best Radiohead. But some may come close.

Dream pop songstress Lucy Mason has done a heck of a job with her cover of the impeccable Radiohead classic, and it's quite lovely indeed. Mason's version focuses on her rich, velvet voice - a perfect fit for the song's fatalistic melancholy. Tender piano and golden swells add to what proves to be a very atmospheric and enchanting effort. It's direct and personal and captivating, and it may give you a chill or two.
