Good Cover Version: Slothrust does Marcy Playground

Pulp gave the world the song "Bad Cover Version." But seeing as I'm a sonic optimist, I'm of the belief that there's more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

Some of you may be too young to remember, but there was a time (circa 1997) that the Marcy Playground song "Sex and Candy" was everywhere. Seriously, everywhere, to the point that at one moment in time it was vexatiously inescapable. I'll be honest, I haven't missed hearing it.

However, along comes Slothrust, and lo and behold their rendering of this late 90s earworm makes me totally rethink my feelings about this particular ditty. Coupled with Leah Wellbaum's icy, disenchanted vocals, the song's rumbling sludge calls to mind its own 90s memories. A solid reimagining of a song that Slothrust ultimately manages to make sound like their own.
