Video Of The Day (Premiere Edition): Guiding Light

There's a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to premiere this here video from the fantastic NYC-based duo Guiding Light. While wrapping up prep on their forthcoming debut long player (which features guest turns from members of Mercury Rev, The Dandy Warhols, and Sparklehorse among others), the twosome is engaging in some pre-gaming in the form of videos and covers (or, as is the case here, both).

A compelling and rather powerful reinterpretation of Phil Collins's "I Don't Care Anymore," Guiding Light bests the original and then some. Tara Autovino's almost primal purr is most certainly out for blood, and the slow burn of the song builds to a clattering, stormcloud crescendo. Behind all the fiery tumult is an uplifting transcendence, a determined strength of purpose. Like I said, powerful stuff.

For aural stimulus, the video offers a dizzying array of jarringly cut, rapid-fire head shots of Autovino and her partner in crime Jason Russo. The simplicity allows the ferocity of the song to carry some serious weight. If these two can do such bewitching things with Phil Collins, who knows what greatness awaits with their own creations?
