Video of The Day: Mattress

There's a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Rex Marshall, AKA Mattress, grew up in Las Vegas. While he's now based in Portland, formative years spent in that peculiar place have certainly informed his music, there seems to be an air of forlorn solitude behind a more optimistic facade. Like the gambler who didn't quite know when to fold 'em, but keeps going back to the table. Dark and synthy, "Looking for My People" twists together a brooding chill with a sort of black comedy. The video, which recalls the genesis of music videos, takes that juxtaposition and runs wild with it. It's camp, to be sure, but there's a distinct creepiness just under the surface. As the song slinks along, Marshall's deep, lounge-ready vocals melt all over.
