A Tribute to Leon Russell (1942-2016)
It's been a week already. The world has gone on, but there's still a heck of a hole. In losing Leon Russell, the music-loving world lost an impactful force, greater than perhaps many even knew.
My experience with Leon began just under a decade ago, when I first began to get my hands on his excellent solo records. With his mischievous, warbling howl and mercurial, ever-changing sound, I was fascinated by the man with the wild white hair and beard. I was fortunate enough to see Leon live several years ago, and was happy to see a large crowd still paying tribute. But Leon's fanbase extends to his fellow legends, like Joe Cocker, Elton John, and the Beach Boys, though that's just a small sample size of the bands he played with and/or wrote for.
Leon Russell was truly one of a kind, and thankfully he left us plenty of reminders to attest to that.
