Good Cover Version: Quiet Hollers does Madonna
Pulp gave the world the song "Bad Cover Version." But seeing as I'm a sonic optimist, I'm of the belief that there's more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.
I've got to hand it to Quiet Hollers. The Louisville fellas took on one of the biggest, baddest pop songs of all musicdom, and darned if the end result isn't mighty fine. The band gave "Material Girl" a stripped, melancholy treatment, highlighting the forlorn materialism with vocals both commanding and pitiable. As a bonus, the video is kind of hilarious, and tempers the sentiment of the song by bringing in some tongue-in-cheek humor. Madonna may or may not approve, but I sure do.
