Live Review: The Jesus & Mary Chain/The Black Ryder @ 9:30 Club, 9/27/15

The world has turned 30 times around the sun since the Jesus & Mary Chain first unleashed Psychocandy on the world. Hard to fathom, but also hard to fathom what modern music might sound like without this record, and this band.

And so, in celebration of the 30th birthday of one of the finest records released in the entire 1980s, many a reveler gathered at the 9:30 for a two night stand. Support was provided by Australian imports The Black Ryder, which made me ever so happy. Their deep, lushly dark contortions provided a perfect segue into the two Jesus & Mary Chain sets.

Set one was a smattering of classics, and I just about burst with glee at the inclusion of longtime favorite "Head On." Set two was the main event, Psychocandy in its entirety. Perhaps it was just that I was completely enthralled, but I thought the set was flawless. And I even thought I detected some enjoyment coming from the stage, adding to the revelry. I'm already a fan of the album revival tours, and having missed out on Psychcandy the first time, it was amazing to get to experience it live after all this time.

Here's hoping the guys keep getting out there on the road every now and again.
