Live Review: The Deadmen @ 9:30 Club, 6/4/14

Just a shade under four years ago, I saw a little group of DC musician types do their live thing for one of the first times. The Deadmen blew me away back then, and I was pretty dang sure they'd be able to do it all over again as they took to the stage at the 9:30 Club for their opening stint for Frank Turner. Lo and behold, with apologies to Yogi Berra, it was deju vu all over again.

Everything I said four years ago holds true to this day. If anything, somehow, they've gotten better. Their sound harnesses a great live wire energy and a mix of rootsy Americana with feisty folk and backwoods balladry. I still think they channel the three B's: The Band, The Boss, and The Byrds, but there's definitely greater depths to what they're doing these days. And mercy, can they wail. The musical prowess of each of the five Deadmen is obvious, and the way their voices blend together is sinfully special. The band has happens to have this incredible appeal, a sort of charming Everyman quality that stands them in good stead when it comes to getting folks to relate to what they do.

Four years after seeing them for the first time, I think it's safe to say The Deadmen still ranks up there with my most favorite DC bands. It's not that I needed a reminder, but good gosh almighty y'all did I get one. Four years ago I said they were on their way, and now I think they're all sorts of primed for the big time. Y'all might as well hop on this here bandwagon now.
