Video Of The Day: The Mercy Beat

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

This next clip is a perfect example of how to make an addictive video for an addictive song. The Mercy Beat's little ditty "Sweet" is wonderful enough on its own, but add this video to it and it goes to eleven. Fellow video magpies will love the brightly colored, floating dots and costumed folks that look like extras from an especially wacky episode of The Prisoner (or maybe Tom Baker-era Dr. Who). There's even some fuzzy black and white video footage of the doomed Edie Sedgwick thrown in for good measure.

It's quite a quirky collection of images, but it all works perfectly with the nostalgicly modern synthpoppery of the song. Mystery surrounds this band, rendering them almost ghost-like, but all you need to know for now is that I'm in serious smit, and after checking out the video you just might join me.
