The Untitled Interview #150 – Hopscotch Edition: Starring Andrew Fitzpatrick (All Tiny Creatures)

If there’s one thing I love, it’s going to a new festival for the first time. And this weekend yours truly shall be heading down to Raleigh for some serious festival goodness in the form of Hopscotch. With a varied, all sorts of awesome lineup, I have no doubt this weekend will be a hot diggity dog dandy. I tracked down some of the most interesting out-of-town prospects playing Hopscotch this year to get their collective take on the joy of fests.

Several things come to mind when I think of Wisconsin: the Packers, the amazing burgers at Dotty Dumplin’s in Madison, and the austere beauty of the North Woods, to name but a few. Add All Tiny Creatures to the list. The Madisonians make a beautiful noise, in its own way very North Woods, rich and bright and a little big magical. I’m excited to finally see them live, that’s for sure. Read on to see how Andrew Fitzpatrick feels about all things festival.

Fuzzy Logic: How are you getting to Hopscotch: plane, train, or automobile?

Andrew Fitzpatrick: We'll be traveling from Wisconsin in a navy blue minivan.

FL: Inevitably, you will forget to pack:

AF: At least one person will forget toothpaste.

FL: How many shows will you be playing?
AF: We're playing two shows in Raleigh, both on Saturday: Tir Na Nog at 4:00 as part of the Blount Street Block Party, and Lincoln Theatre at 9:30 opening for Yelawolf, Future Islands, and Toro Y Moi.

FL: Band you're most looking forward to seeing at the festival?
AF: Three-way tie: Rhys Chatham, Krallice, and Swans.

FL: What's the first thing you plan on doing upon arrival in Raleigh?
AF: Check in at the Sheraton, then hopefully eat dinner at Poole's.

FL: What was the first festival you ever attended, either as a musician or member of the general public?
AF: Our first festival as a band was three years ago at the Forward Music Festival in Madison, WI, which was also a three-day multi-venue affair.

FL: Favorite thing about festivals?
AF: The best thing about festivals is also the worst thing about festivals -- it's great to have so many amazing choices, but it's unfortunate when three bands you want to see are playing at the same time. Friday night at Hopscotch is going to be a tough one.
