The Good Ship Rediscovery: Sluts of Trust - We Are All Sluts of Trust

We all forget about the older stuff from time to time, in our quest to stay up to speed with the latest and greatest. But one should always respect their elders. So don’t you forget about them, y’hear?

Y’all know I have quite a soft spot for bands from north of the Borders (and to clarify, we’re talking about the Borders to be found between England and Scotland here). Josef K, The Phantom Band, Camera Obscura, Arab Strap, Orange Juice, and so on and so forth en masse, to name just a few Scottish bands I’ve become quite fond of over the years. The band I’d like to discuss today, Sluts of Trust, sounded, and still sound, like no other Scottish noisesmiths I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. There’s not a drop of twee here, my friends, and only scant traces of those great Scots bands of the 80s. As likely to wear the blackest of black eyeliner as some shitkickers, the duo behind Sluts of Trust served up a record that was the ultimate in ferociously debaucherous, lustily lecherous rock hedonism.

John McFarlane and Anthony O’Donnell cut quite the devilishly naughty figure on record, with sonic come-ons in abundance and blatant sexuality oozing from virtually every note. Like an impossibly oversexed Queens of the Stone Age gone to Scotland wherein they listen to lots and lots of T. Rex and get more than a little glammed up, the zealous tones of Sluts of Trust don’t let up once over the course of the ten songs on the record. Brutal drumming and scorching guitarplay hallmark each song, and the already salacious songs given added wickedness thanks to one heck of a willfully deviant brogue (see “Greatest Gift,” among others, for particularly scandalous vocal wantonness). Even when the instance arises where sex isn’t the topic at hand, it sounds as though it is. At times, the record feels a little over the top, though as far as I’m concerned there’s nothing wrong with that.

Sluts of Trust put the sex in sex, drugs, and rock & roll. It’s boys like these that make fathers want to lock up their daughters indefinitely, and that we daughters just can’t seem to get enough of.
