Meet The People’s Temple

The People’s Temple was the name used by Jim Jones for his cult. The People’s Temple is the name used by a band of psych rock makers from Michigan. I come to tell you, friends, just why you should become a follower of the Midwestern version of The People’s Temple.

To listen to The People’s Temple is to step foot outside of your current reality and into another time and place. Theirs is heavy, turbulent psych with serious attitude, definitely chasing the ghosts of fellow Michiganian (via the Motor City) forefathers MC5 and The Stooges, though they don’t spare a little bit of delirious jangle either, tinged with just a touch of sleaze. They wail, shout, and create pummeling noise with the best of the psych rock crop. More For The Masses, the LP that I haven’t been able to stop listening to for months, is spilling over with sweet sonic devotions. It’s a dizzy, upside-down and backwards and forwards romp through kaleidoscopic shades of psych, and I’m a sucker for it.

Brothers and sisters, I strongly encourage you to drink this Kool Aid.

Singles Club: Ponctuation

O, Canada. Sometimes the exports are terrible (y'all know who I'm talking about). But sometimes, the exports are mighty fine. One such import from Canadia that's caught my ear lately is Ponctuation, a fiercely French-singing outfit out of Quebec.

Scuzzy as you like, "27 Club" shambolicly cavorts and careens around somewhat snotty, somewhat bored French vocals. There's definitely some strut here, and the pervasive jangle makes for a catchy little number. It's a song that doesn't quite snarl, it sneers. And I like it.

The Week In Shows: 1/27-2/2

A freezing cold Saturday morning is as good a time as any to plot ones weekly live music schedule, I think. Let's take a look at what's happening in the greater DC metro this week, with the added bonus of filling you in on what I may or may not be taking in over the course of the week. Hot diggity!

I must say, friends, that I don't really find this Baltic weather we're currently dealing with conducive to much apart from curling up in bed and hibernating. Below freezing = bad. Guest Best Of: Starring Nick Furgiuele (Gringo Star)

Y'all know that my Best Of 2013 is a little ways away (I promise, it'll be earlier than last year's roundup), but to get you in the end of year mood, I thought I'd ask a few musician friends for their picks for the best records of this year. I'm also nosy/curious, and just wanted to see what they'd choose. After all, as I said last year, a person's record selections say a lot about them.

I think we can all agree that Gringo Star is one of the best dang band names around. They're also one of the best bands at purveying a swinging 60s-psych rock jangling shimmy shake, especially when on stage. The lovely Mister Nick Gurgiuele (singing/multi-instrumentalizing) had a busy year, with the Gringos taking frequent roadtrips, but still managed to send me a list of some of his favorite records of 2013. Read on, friends. Read on.

Shantih Shantih - Something Else to Drink
The Harlequins - Sex Change
J Roddy Walston and The Business - Essential Tremors
Turf War - Cheers to The Years
Ruby Velle and The Soulphonics - It's About Time
